Saphir, Jacob

Saphir, Jacob a Jewish traveller, was born in 1830, and died at Jerusalem, June 23,1885. He visited Egypt, Arabia, India, and Australia; the results of his researches he published in אבן ספיר (1868, 1874, 2 volumes). This work is of great historical and ethnographical value. For the Hebrew codex which Saphir brought from Arabia and sold to. the public library at Paris in 1868, SEE SHAPIRA MANUSCRIPT. (B.P.)
