Jins

Jins (i.e., enii), according to the Mohammedams, an intermediate race between angels and men. They are said to be made of fire, but with grosser bodies than the angels, to propagate their species, and, though longlived, not to be immortal; also to have inhabited the earth previous to Adam, under a succession of sovereigns. Mohammed professed to be sent as a preacher to them as well as to men. In the Koran there is a chapter bearing their name, in which they are introduced as saying: "There are some among us who are upright, and there are some among us who are otherwise; we are of different ways, and we verily thought that we could by no means frustrate God in the earth, neither could we escape him by flight; therefore, when we heard the direction, we believed therein. There are Moslems among us, and others who swerve from righteousness."
