Deportatio

Deportatio is a term for carrying a bishop in a chair by his fellow-bishops, on his way to be enthroned. It was customary in the Gallican Church. A "chairing" of the bishop on the shoulders of certain persons of rank, the first time he entered his cathedral, was customary in several of the French churches in the middle ages.
