Chester, Alfred

Chester, Alfred, a Presbyterian minister, was born at Hartford, Conn., March 17, 1798" He graduated at Yale College in 1818, spent one year at Andover Theological Seminary, and the two succeeding-years at Princeton Theological Seminary. After three years' service as a home missionary in South Carolina, he was. ordained over the Presbyterian Church at Reahrway, N. J., in July, 1826. He left his charge in 1829; for the next fourteen years was the principal of a classical school in Morristown, and agent of the. Presbyterian Board of Publication until about 1858. During the latter part of is life he resided in Elizabeth, and for the last nine years was chaplain of the county prison there. He died in New York city, July 2, 1871.
