Buddha, Living

Buddha, Living a term applied to certain saints among the Mongol Tartars in Thibet, who are believed to have passed through various stages of being, and supposed to be fitted to preside over a Lamasery (q.v.). He is also called a Chaberon, and such superiors are in large numbers, and placed at the head of the most important religious establishments. He may commence his career with only a few disciples, but, as his reputation grows, the number of his followers increases, and his temple becomes the resort of many pilgrims and devout persons. See Hue, Travels in Tartary, Thibet, and China. SEE LAMAISM.
