Wood, N.N., D.D.

a Baptist minister, was born at Fairfax, Vermont, May 1, 1808. He graduated from Middlebury College, in 1835; for one year was principal of the Black River Academy; studied theology for a part of the regular course at Madison University; was ordained pastor of the Church at Lebanon Springs, N.Y., in 1838; in 1842 went to Vicksburg, Miss.; resigned his pastorate in 1845, and went to Market Street Church, Zanesville, Ohio, where he remained until 1850, when he was called to the presidency of Shurtleff College, Upper Alton, Illinois, holding this office until 1855. For one year after his resignation he was pastor at Palmyra, Missouri; then became a chaplain in the Union army. Near the close of the war he removed to Jacksonville, Illinois, where, for several years, he was professor of mental and moral philosophy and logic in the Young Ladies' Athenaeum.
