Weimar Hymnbook

Weimar Hymn-book was a work prepared by Herder at Weimar in 1778. His plan was to restore the old hymns to their original readings, and introduce as many as possible that were already established in the hearts of the people. He thought it subversive of the highest interests of the Church to alter these compositions to meet the peculiar views of theologians of successive generations, yet he would not pursue his own method of restoration without certain restrictions within the bounds of reason. See Hagenbach, Hist. of the Church in the 18th and 19th Centuries, 2:53 sq.
