Wackernagel, Karl Eduard Philipp

Wackernagel, Karl Eduard Philipp a German Protestant hymnologist of great note, was born at Berlin, June 28, 1800, where also he studied natural sciences and philology. In 1820 he was promoted at Erlangen as doctor of philosophy, and in 1861 the University of Breslau conferred on him the degree of doctor of divinity. He died June 20, 1877, at Dresden, where he had resided from 1860. Wackernagel was a member of different learned societies of Germany and Holland. Besides a number of works on mathematics and natural sciences, he published very important contributions to German hymnology, which made him an authority in that department. We name, Das deutsche Kirchenlied (Stuttgart, 1841): — Bibliographie zur Gesch. d. deutschen Kirchenliedes im 16. Jahrhundert (Frankfort-on-the-Main, 1855): — Lieder der niederldndischen Reformirten aus der Zeit der Vesfolgung im 16. Jahrhundert (1867): Das deutsche Kirchenlied von den altesten Zeiten (Leips. 1864-73, 4 vols.). Besides these, he published the hymns of Paul Gerhard, Martin Luther, and Johann Hermann.
