Varanès was the name of six Persian kings of the dynasty of the Sassanidee. Varanes V, or Bahram Gour (the wild ass), reigned A.D. 420-440. The persecutions against the Christians were carried by him to such an extent that thousands of his subjects took refuge in the Roman dominions.
