Pratt, John, D.D.

a Baptist minister and educator, was born in Windham County, Connecticut, October 12, 1800. After spending a few years in Columbian College, he graduated from Brown University in 1827. For a short time he was a professor in Transylvania University, Ketnucky, and then accepted a call to the pastorate of the First Baptist Church in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1831 for six months, he had charge of the South Reading, Massachusetts (now Wakefield), Academy, and then was invited to preside over the Graliville, Ohio, Literary and Theological Institution. In 1837 he resigned, and accepted the professorship of ancient languages in that institution, and held this position, with occasional interruptions, for twenty- two-years (1837-59), when he retired to private life.
