Pinkerton, Robert, D.D.

a Scotch Congregational minister, was born in 1780. He left Scotland in 1805 as missionary among the tribes of the Caucasus, under the patronage of the Edinburgh Missionary Society. In 1809 he took up his residence at Moscow, and, in company with Drs. Paterson and Henderson. undertook the visitation of the Russian empire with the view of putting the Bible, into universal circulation. When those labors were suspended by imperial authority, Dr. Pinkerton travelled over the entire continent of Europe for the purpose of organizing societies for the dissemination of the Bible, both in Protestant and Catholic countries.
