Orley, Jean Van

Orley, Jean Van, a Belgian painter, was born at Brussels in 1656. He first studied with his father, but afterwards devoted himself to historical painting with considerable success, and was much employed in painting for the churches in the Netherlands. In the church of St. Nicholas at Brussels is a picture by him representing St. Peter delivered from Prison, and in the parochial church of Asch a picture of the Resurrection, which are highly commended. His masterpiece is a large picture of the Adoration of the Magi in the refectory of the abbey of Dillighem. He etched a part of the plates, from his own designs, for the New Testament. He died in 1740.
