Olshausen, Justus

Olshausen, Justus a famous German Orientalist, brother of Hermann, was born May 9,1800, at Hohenfelde, Holstein, and studied at Kiel, Berlin, and Paris. In 1823 he was professor at Kiel, and in 1845 member of the Danish Academy of Sciences. Four years after Holstein was annexed by Denmark, in 1848, Olshausen was deposed of his professorship. He was appointed, in 1853, head-librarian and professor of Oriental languages at Konigsberg; in 1858 he was called to a position in the ministry for education at Berlin, from which he retired in 1874. Olshausen died Dec. 28, 1882. Besides his contributions to the monthly reports of the Berlin Academy of Sciences, Olshausen published, Emendationen zum Alten Testament (Kiel, 1826): Zur Topographie des alten Jerusalem (1833): — Erklarung der Psalmen (Leipsic, 1853): — Lehrbuch der Hebr.
