Juhles a name given to aerial spirits or daemons among the Laplanders, from whom they receive a sort of adoration, though no statues or images of them exist. Their worship is conducted under particular trees. On Christmas-eve, and the day following, they celebrate the festival of the Juhles. On this occasion they rigidly abstain from animal food; and they carefully reserve some fragments of the food employed, which they suspend in a box behind the house, for the refreshment; of the spirits.
