Gillies, John (2)

Gillies, John LL.D., was born at Brechin, Scotland, January 18, 1747, and was educated at the University of Glasgow. In 1793 he became historiographer royal for Scotland; in 1830 he removed to Clapham, near London, where he died, February 15, 1836. He wrote several historical works, now of little value, and translated several Greek authors, among them Aristotle (Ethics, Politics, Rhetoric), very badly.
