Gelder, Arnauld Van

Gelder, Arnauld Van an eminent Dutch painter, was born at Dort in 1645, and acquired the elements of design under Samuel van Hoogstraeten, but afterwards went to, Amsterdam and entered the school of Rembrandt. Among his principal historical works are a picture at Dort, representing Solomon on his Throne, Surrounded by his Soldiers; at the Hague, A Jewish Synagogue. His master-piece was a picture at Dort, representing Bathsheba Entreating David to Leave his Kingdom to Solomon. His last work was the Sufferings of Christ. He died at Dort in 1727. See Hoefer, Nouv.
