Fitch, Elijah

Fitch, Elijah a Congregational minister, was born at Windham, Connecticut, in 1746, and graduated from Yale College in 1765. After preaching for a time in Franklin, Massachusetts, he was ordained, January 15, 1772, at Hopkinton, as colleague with Reverend Samuel Barrett, who died the December following, when Mr. Fitch became sole pastor of the church. He remained in office until his death, December 16, 1788. He was a fine scholar and poet, as well as an excellent minister. See Hist. of Mendon Association, page 117. (J.C.S.)
