Espinac, Pierre D

Espinac, Pierre D'

a French prelate, born early in the 16th century, was the son of Pierre d'Espinac, lieutenant of the king in Burgundy. He became canon count, then dean of the Church of Lyons, and finally archbishop there, after the death of his uncle, Antoine d'Albon, in 1574. The clergy chose him as their orator in the assembly of Blois, and he became chief of the deputation of the Catholics at the celebrated deputation of Suresne. He died January 9, 1599, leaving, besides addresses on the above occasions, Exhortation au Peuple de Lyon (1583): — Un Breviaire: Des Poesies Francaises (not printed). See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog.
