Curwen, John

Curwen, John an English Congregational minister, was born at Heckmondwike, Yorkshire, November 14, 1816. He was early brought to Christ; was educated at Coward College, and at University College, London; became assistant minister in the Church at Basingstoke in 1838; in 1841 co-pastor at Stowmarket, Suffolk; in 1844 pastor at Plaistow; resigned in 1867, on account of ill-health, and devoted himself to the improvement of Church music, establishing a printing and publishing business for that purpose. He died May 26, 1880. He published, The Little Tune-book Harmonized: The Child's Own Hymn-book: The Standard Course of the Tonic-sol-fa Method: How to Observe Harmony: The Teacher's Manual: Musical Statics: Constructive Exercises in Elementary Musical Composition: Musical Theory, and other works.
