Burton, Robert

Burton, Robert was born at Lindley, Feb. 8, 1576, studied at Oxford, and died Jan. 25, 1639; he was student of Christ Church, vicar of St. Thomas, in Oxford, and rector of Seagrave, in Leicestershire. He is only known as the author of the celebrated Anatomy of Melancholy, first published in 1621, 4to, of which many editions have been printed, and which still holds a foremost place in literature.
