Benedict, Stephen

Benedict, Stephen a Baptist layman, the founder of the Benedict Institute, located at Columbus, S. C., was born at Milton, Saratoga Co., N. Y., Jan. 15, 1801. He removed to Pawtucket, R. I., in early life, and. for twenty-five years was a deacon of the First Baptist Church in that place. He died Dec. 25, 1868. He left by his will, $2000 to the American Baptist. Home Society, which was appropriated to the purchase of the estate in Columbus, S. C., now used for the education of colored preachers. See Baptist Encyclopedia, p. 95. (J. C. S.)
