Belknap, Jeremy, D.D.

was born at Boston, June 4, 1744, and graduated at Harvard in 1762. In 1767 he was ordained pastor of the Congregational Church at Dover, N.H., where he labored for over 20 years. In 1787 he became pastor at Boston, where he died, June 20, 1798. He was one of the founders of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and devoted much of his time to the promotion of its objects. Among his writings are the History of New Hampshire (1784-1792, 3 vols.); American Biography (1794-1798, 2 vols.); and a number of political and religious tracts, besides occasional sermons. — Allen, Biog.
