Acrostic (2)

Acrostic hymns were in use in the ancient Church; and specimens remain in Greek, but especially in Latin. The term was also applied to the Christian formula ἰχθύς, SEE ICHTHYS. A peculiar use of the term occurs in the Greek office-books, in which the successive canons begin with the several letters of the alphabet.
