Abilius

Abilius ST. (variously written Αἰμίλιος, Α᾿μέλιος,. Melias, etc., and perhaps, the Latin Avilius), was the second bishop of Alexandria (after St. Mark), A.D. 86-96. According to one tradition, he was ordained presbyter, together with his successor Cerdon, by Mark himself. According to another tradition he was appointed bishop by Luke. Abilius is commemorated in the Roman martyrology on Feb. 22; in the Ethiopic on Aug. 29.
