Suburbs (2)

Suburbs, in an ecclesiastical sense, meant, in the early Church, all the towns and villages within the region or district to which the city magistrate extended his jurisdiction, whose bounds, for the most part, were the bounds of the bishop's diocese. See Bingham, Christ. Antiq. bk. 9:ch. 2,§ 3.
