Smyth, Thomas, Dd

Smyth, Thomas, D.D., a Presbyterian minister, was born in Belfast, Ireland, June 14, 1808. He was educated at Belfast and at London, and came to the United States in 1830. He was graduated at Princeton Theological Seminary, N.J., after which he was pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church at Charleston, S.C., from 1832 until his death, Aug. 20, 1873. He was the author of numerous works, chiefly in illustration and defense of the Presbyterian form of Church government; also of The Unity of the Human Race Proved to be the Doctrine of Scripture, Reason, and Science (1850), and The True Origin and Source of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.
