Smedes, Aldert, D.D.

a Protestant Episcopal clergyman, was born in New York city, April 29, 1810. He graduated from Transylvania University in 1826, and from the General Theological Seminary in 1832; from 1836 to 1839 was rector of St. George's Church, in Schenectady, N.Y.; in 1842 opened St. Mary's School, in Raleigh, N.C., of which he was rector until his death, April 25, 1877.
