Lance, the Holy (1)

Lance, The Holy (1), is the name of a knife very much in the form of a lance, used in the Greek Church to imitate the spear by which Christ was pierced. With this "holy lance" the priest, at communion, cuts the bread, while reading the corresponding passages of the N.T. Scriptures. See Martigny, Diet. des Antiquites, page 353.
