Hillyer, Asa, D.D.

a Presbyterian minister, was born in Massachusetts, April 6, 1763. He graduated at Yale College in 1786; was ordained by the Presbytery of Suffolk, L.I., in 1788; called to Bottle Hill (now Madison), N.J., in 1789; to the First Presbyterian Church of Orange in 1801; resigned his charge when he was seventy years of age, and died at Orange, August 28, 1840. During his pastorate at Orange he made a missionary tour through northern Pennsylvania and western New York, and preached the first sermon ever heard in what is now the city of Auburn.
