Higbie, Elnathan Elisha

Higbie, Elnathan Elisha a German Reformed minister and educator, was born at St. George, Vermont, March 27, 1830. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1849, and completed his theological course at Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. In 1864, while Dr. Philip Schaff was in Europe, he occupied the chair of church history and exegesis, and in 1866 was elected to succeed him. In 1871 he was made president of Mercersburg College, and in 1881 appointed superintendent of public instruction for Pennsylvania, which position he held until his death, December 13, 1888. He was a frequent contributor to the Mercersburg Review.
