Hail!

Hail!

(χἃ ιρε, rejoice, as often rendered; "farewell" also), a salutation, importing a wish for the welfare of the person addressed (Lu 1:28; in 'mockery, Mt 27:29, etc.). It is now seldom used among us, but was customary among our Saxon ancestors, and imported as much as "Joy to you," or "Health to you;" including in the term health all kinds of prosperity. — Calmet, s.v.
