Grimaldi, Domenico

Grimaldi, Domenico a Genoese prelate, was born in 1592, being the son of Giambattista Grimaldi, lord of Montaldeo. lie had distinguished himself in the army when pope Pius V appointed him commissary general of the galleys of the Church, in which capacity he took an active part in the battle of Lepanto. He afterwards entered into orders, and obtained the abbey of Mont Majour-les-Arles. In 1581 Gregory XIII gave. him the bishopric of Savona, from which he was transferred, in 1584, to the see of Cavaillo, as archbishop and vice-legate. He persecuted Protestants with rigor and cruelty. He died in 1592. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog. Generale, s.v.
