Greetinghouse

Greeting-house a term sometimes applied in mediaeval times to the chapter-house of a cathedral, where a newly-appointed bishop or dean received the greetings respectively of his flock, or the members of his cathedral. Such greetings, however, were as frequently given at the entrance of the choir, or in the sacristy. To an abbot they were sometimes tendered in the refectory, or even in the choir after the rites of installation.
