Gordon, William (2)

D.D., an English clergyman and historian, was born at Hitchin, Hertfordshire, in 1729, and educated at a Dissenting academy near London. He was pastor of an Independent Church at Ipswich, and was subsequently successor to Dr. David Jennings, in the church at Old Gravel Lane, Wapping. He removed to America in 1770, and became minister of the Third Church, Roxbury, Massachusetts. In 1781 he returned to England, and preached both at St. Neots, Huntingdonshire, and at Ipswich. He died at the latter place, October 19, 1807. He published sermons, etc., 1772, 1775, 1777, 1783: — An Abridgment of Jonathan Edwards' Treatise on the Religious Affections: — A History of the Rise, Progress, and Establishment of the Independency of the United States of America (1788).
