Gallery (2)

Gallery originally a banqueting hall. The word is now applied, in ecclesiastical architecture, to any floor elevated above the floor of a main audience room of a church, and built to contain hearers. Galleries of this kind date from the time of the Reformation, though somewhat similar galleries existed in the Byzantine churches. Narrow covered passage-ways, within or without a church, especially in Romanesque churches, are also termed galleries. (G.F.C.)

Bible concordance for GALLERIES.
