Ferne, Henry, D.D.

bishop of Chester, was born at York in 1602, and em-as educated at St. Mary's Hall, Oxford, and at Trinity College, Cambridge, of which he became a fellow. He was made chaplain to the bishop of Durham, and was successively presented to the livings of Masham, of Medborn, and to the archdeaconry of Leicester. He took his doctor's degree in 1642, and espoused the cause of Charles I, who made him his chaplain. On the Restoration Charles II gave him the mastership of Trinity College, and ha was twice chosen vice-chancellor. He was made bishop of Chester in 1660, died in 1661, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. He published four tracts against the rebellion, 1642-43; two sermons, 1644-4 9; and five treatises in defense of the Church of England against Romanism and Presbyterianism, 1647-60.
