Faber, Basil

Faber, Basil a learned German Protestant divine, was born at Sorau, in Lower Lusatia, about 1520, studied at Wittenberg under Melancthon, was rector of the gymnasium at Nordhausen, 1550-55, and afterwards of Quedlinburg, 1563- 70. He opposed Melancthon's Corpus Doctrinae and the Crypto-Calvinists, and in 1570 had to leave Quedlinburg on this account. He then taught at Erfurt till his death, 1576. His chief work is the Thesauerus eruditionis scholasticce (Lips. 1571; last ed. Francft. 1749, 2 volumes, fol.), a work which still commands consideration for its extensive and exact learning. He was also one of the writers of the Magdeburg Centuries (q.v.).
