Elwert, Eduard

Elwert, Eduard an evangelical theologian of Germany, was born at Cannstadt, February 22, 1805. In 1830 he commenced his academical career at Tubingen, was in 1836 appointed professor at Zurich, and from 1839 to 1841 acted as professor at Tubingen. Bodily infirmities obliged him to retire from his academic activity, and he accepted the pastorate at Motzingen. In 1850 he was placed at the head of the Schonthal Seminary, where he labored until 1864, when he was obliged to retire entirely from active work. He died June 9, 1865, at his native place, having published, De Antinomia Joh. Agricolce (Zurich, 1836): Annotationes in Galatians 2:1-10, etc. (Tubingen, 1852): — Quaestiones et Observationes ad Philologiam Sacram N. Test. Pertinentes (ibid. 1860). He also contributed to several theological reviews. See Kubel, in Herzog-Plitt, Real-Encyklop. s.v.; Zuchold, Bibl. Theol. 1:318. (B.P.)
