Duffield, George, D.D, an eminent Presbyterian minister, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, October 7, 1732, and graduated at Nassau Hall in 1752, where, after completing his theological studies, he became tutor for two years. He was licensed in 1756, and having accepted a call from the united churches of Carlisle, Big Spring, and Monahan, Pennsylvania, was ordained in 1761. He was a very popular preacher, and a zealous promoter of revivals. In 1766 he undertook an important mission along the frontiers of Pennsylvania to the Potomac, with a view to the organization of churches. Some time after he was called to the Second Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, and became chaplain to the Colonial Congress for part of a session. He attended the American army through New Jersey in the darkest hours of the Revolution, and manifested himself on all occasions the uncompromising advocate of civil and religious freedom.
