Croft, Sir Herbert (1)

an English clergyman, was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, and became a member of Parliament in the latter end of queen Elizabeth's reign. After he had lived fifty-two years as a Protestant he became a Roman Catholic, went to Douay, and had an apartment in the monastery of the English Benedictines as a lay brother of the order. He died April 10, 1622, leaving Arguments to Show that the Church in Communion with the See of Rome is the True Church (1619). See Chalmers, Biog. Dict. s.v.; Allibone, Dict. of Brit. and Amer.
