Cima, Giovanni Battista

Cima, Giovanni Battista (called il Conegliano), an Italian painter, was born in 1460 at Conegliano, near Trevigi, in the state of Venice, and practiced the art from 1489 to 1541. One of his best works is now in the Louvre, at Paris, The Virgin and Inftnft, Receiving the Homage of Several Saints. His descent from the Cross, in San Niccolo, at Carpi, is considered very good. In San Giovanni, at Venice, is a fine picture by him of The Baptism of Christ. Some of the altar-pieces attributed to him may belong to his son Carlo.
