Carnaïm

Car´Naïm (Καρναϊvν v. r. Καρνείν, Vulg. Carnaïm), a large and fortified city in the country east of Jordan — "the land of Galaad" — containing a "temple" (τὸ τέμενος ἐν K.). It was besieged and taken by Judas Maccableus (1 Macc. 5:26, 43, 44). Under the name of CARNION (τὸ Καρνίον) the same occurrence is related in 2 Macc. 12:21, 26, the temple being called the ATARGATEION (τὸ Α᾿ταργατεῖον). This enables us to identify it with ASHTEROTH-KARNAIM SEE ASHTEROTH-KARNAIM (q.v.).
