Caliphate

Caliphate is the office of caliph in Mohammedan countries. It continued from the death of Mohammed till the taking of Bagdad by the Tartars in the six hundred and fifty-fifth year of the Hegira (A.D. 1307). The title was claimed, however, by certain individuals in Egypt, who assumed to be of the family of the Abbasides, and the successors of the Prophet. The honor of being the true caliphs is claimed at present by the emperors of Morocco.
