By-word represents in the Auth. Vers. the following Hebrew words: מַלָּה, millah'(Job 30:9), a word or speech (as elsewhere rendered); מָשָׁל, mashal' (Ps 44:14), a proverb or parable (as elsewhere); so the kindred משֹׁל, meshol' (Job 17:6); but properly: שׁנַינָה, sheninah', sharp words in derision (De 28:37; 1Ki 9:7; 2Ch 7:20; "taunt," Jer 24:9).
