Andrews, Ebenezer B., Ll.D., a Presbyterian minister, was born in Pennsylvania. He was of a ministerial family, the sacred calling being the profession of his father and five sons, of whom he was the youngest and the first to depart this life. He received his education at Williams and Marietta colleges, and pursued his theological studies at Princeton Seminary. He was ordained and installed pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Housatonic, Mass., and subsequently became pastor of the New Britain Church, Conn., where he remained until he was elected professor of geology at Marietta College in 1851. He filled this appointment with great ability and success until 1861, when he was appointed on the Geological Survey of the State of Ohio. He was earnest and consistent, and ready to make any sacrifice for the public good. He felt it his duty during the war of the Rebellion to accept the office of major in the Thirty-sixth Regiment of Ohio Volunteers, which had been tendered him unsolicited by the governor of Ohio, and served two years as major and colonel. He was recently appointed one of the members of the Board of Inspection of the United States Mint, Philadelphia, He published several valuable papers, and a work on geology for the use of colleges and schools.
