Allen, Lorenzo Bickford, Dd

Allen, Lorenzo Bickford, D.D., a Baptist minister, was born at Jefferson, Me., June 4, 1812, and was a graduate of Waterville College in the class of 1835. For the next four years he was engaged in teaching, a part of the time at Richmond and a part of the time at Waterville. He pursued his theological studies at Thomaston under Prof. Calvin Newton, and was ordained pastor of the First Baptist Church at Thomaston on May 27,1840, where he remained four years, and then became pastor of the Second Church in the same place, sustaining the relation until July, 1849. During most of the years from 1845 to 1856 he was employed as secretary of the Maine Baptist Missionary Society. From November, 1849, to November, 1856, he was pastor of the Baptist Church in Yarmouth. In April, 1857, he entered upon his duties as professor of ancient languages in Burlington University, of which he was for a time the president, resigning his position in 1865. For the next three years he was pastor of the First Baptist Church at Minneapolis, Minn., and for the next three years and more he preached and taught at Wasioja, where he died, Aug. 20, 1872. (J.
